It’s so easy to take things for granted- especially in America- we have so much and we are so very blessed.
Often times, it’s the things we were given FREE OF CHARGE that turn out to be the things we miss the most when they are removed.
I was speaking at an event and sharing on the POWER of GRATITUDE. As usual, I had a SMILEY FACE presence in the room and throughout my presentation. Such a small and wonderful reminder to me that I have so much to smile about and be grateful for.
I finished the presentation and that is when Kelly came up to see me. She started off by saying she used to hate seeing any SMILEY FACE then she shared her story. People always told Kelly what a beautiful smile she had. She loved that part of who she was. So, when a brain tumor started causing paralysis throughout Kelly’s body, that once full smile all but disappeared. Her smile; the bright, inviting, external evidence of her was paralyzed as well. Seeing smiley faces was just a reminder of what had been lost. Over time and with lots of physical therapy, Kelly was able to regain a large part of her smile but in the meantime, she realized that her EXTERNAL smile was only part of her JOY and that her actions and attitude sent a smile into the world- even when her mouth was unable to communicate the way she wanted!
I LOVE Kelly’s story. It reminds me that a SMILE shows up in lots of ways-
- What we do
- How we treat people
- Our attitudes and YES- that glorious SMILE (if we are lucky enough to have one!!)
Kelly’s story also reminded me that there are lots of things we are given for free- the ability to SMILE for example- and when they are removed- we gain a renewed sense of Gratitude!
This SMILE is for you Sweet Kelly!!
