I just got back from a walk here in Texas, and let me tell you- an earlier walk would have been a much smarter idea. It was hot, and honestly, I wasn’t paying all that much attention. My mind was moving faster than my feet, bouncing between schedules, responsibilities, thoughts, and the general noise life tends to bring with it.
As I rounded a corner, I glanced down and saw a dime on the ground.
Without hesitation, I bent over and picked it up.
Truthfully, I probably would have done the same thing for a penny. I’ve always been a “see a penny, pick it up” kind of girl.
There’s something ingrained in many of us that says coins have value, so we notice them.
But just a few steps later, I walked past a bolt lying on the ground.
I barely even looked at it.
Then I stepped over a washer.
Same thing.
No pause. No curiosity. No second thought.
But after a few more steps, something hit me.
That bolt I had just ignored was probably worth more than the dime I immediately picked up.
So I stopped walking.
I turned around.
And this time, I paid attention.
I picked up the bolt. Then I found two washers nearby. One tiny little washer was probably worth about ten cents. Another one, after a quick online search later, turned out to be worth around thirty-seven cents. The bolt itself? Likely around a dollar and a half.
Interesting, isn’t it?
The thing I instantly recognized as valuable was actually worth the least.
And the things I overlooked- the things that seemed ordinary, unimportant, or easy to dismiss- held more value than I initially realized.
It made me wonder how often we do this in life.
How many valuable things do we step over simply because we don’t immediately recognize their worth?
Or because we’re distracted.
Frazzled.
Hurting.
Busy.
Overheated by life.
Focused on something else.
Sometimes we overlook opportunities because they don’t look shiny enough.
Sometimes we overlook people because they aren’t loud enough or they have become too familiar.
Sometimes we overlook ideas because they don’t arrive wrapped in obvious importance.
And sometimes, if we’re honest, we overlook ourselves because we’ve forgotten our own value beneath the dust and noise of life.
The truth is, value isn’t always obvious at first glance.
A dime looks valuable because we’ve been taught to recognize it immediately.
But bolts and washers?
They’re the quiet pieces that hold things together.
Not flashy.
Not glamorous.
Just essential.
And maybe that’s true for people too.
The steady team member who never asks for attention.
The friend who quietly shows up every single time.
The exhausted mother holding a family together.
The older man with wisdom nobody pauses long enough to hear.
The dream that doesn’t seem exciting at first, but could become something extraordinary if given time and attention.
Sometimes the most valuable things in our lives are the very things we almost walk past.
Thankfully, life occasionally gives us the chance to stop, turn around, and look again.
And maybe that’s the lesson.
Slow down enough to notice.
Scratch beneath the surface.
Don’t assign value too quickly.
Because the world is full of bolts and washers disguised as ordinary things.
And they may be worth far more than we realize.
