Today, I cooked for my team.
Not just any lunch, Perry Tacos, a name my crew affectionately coined for our special recipe.
These aren’t your average tacos; they’re made with care, a mix of seasoned ground beef and sausage, and a not-so-secret twist: lightly fried flour tortillas, crisped to perfection in extra virgin olive oil.
It started last night when I gathered all the ingredients and packed my truck with a countertop cooker and portable cooktop, frying pan and utensils. This morning, I grabbed the chilled items and headed to the office, determined to make lunch something special. Cooking for 20+ people isn’t exactly a walk in the park, but I was committed: committed to each team member receiving a made-to-order taco, hot out of the pan, prepared just for them.

I offered a few gentle tips to help them build the perfect bite:
- Start with the meat,
- Add the cheese (so it melts from the heat),
- Then pile on the toppings from the colorful spread I set up in the kitchen.
Just for fun, I encouraged everyone to try something a little unconventional: ketchup on their tacos! Yes, seriously. It’s a surprisingly delicious twist that a few adventurous souls embraced.
Cooking for and serving my crew today reminded me of something important: No matter how heavy life feels, whether from personal struggles or business pressures, there’s something deeply healing about giving. Leadership isn’t just about strategies or metrics; it’s about showing up, seeing, and serving the people God gave you.
When you roll up your sleeves and share a meal, when you listen, laugh, and create a moment of joy, you’re building something far more valuable than a bottom line. You’re creating a legacy. And as we say at TMC, the “L” in our core values stands for Leaving a Legacy of Fun.
Today wasn’t just about tacos. It was about connection, about reminding my team (and myself) that we’re more than our job titles or daily tasks. We’re a family. And a simple taco, made with love, can say more than a thousand emails ever could.
CLOSING REFLECTION
As I stood there, watching my team savor each bite and laugh together, I realized these moments; simple, shared, and full of heart, are the threads that weave a strong, resilient team. They remind us that even when life feels heavy, we can choose to lighten the load for others.
And can I just say… I have a whole new appreciation for the real culinary wizards out there! Figuring out how to time those made-to-order tacos was a comedy of errors in my makeshift office kitchen. At one point, I literally walked through the office, taco shell sizzling in the pan, wondering if anyone was even coming to my “restaurant”. Keeping the toppings fresh and clean while running back and forth to the cooktop? Another magic trick! And just when I thought I could take a break, I overheard someone saying another team member was already in the kitchen so I jumped up like a shot! Was someone waiting on me again? In the end, I didn’t just cook tacos today, I gained a whole new respect for the amazing folks in the restaurant industry who deliver exceptional meals while keeping everything running smoothly. You all are heroes.
So here’s my encouragement for you today: Find your own way to give, whether it’s cooking a meal, offering a kind word, or simply listening. In doing so, you’ll discover what I did today: when you give, you’re not just filling someone else’s plate; you are also filling your own heart.
